Who: The Environmental Conservancy of North Port / Suncoast Ecological Services

What: Native Habitat restoration

Where: Private yards & Public spaces

Why: Increased development is rapidly reducing greenspace.

Planting sod and non-native landscaping further degrades area habitat. Utilizing locally native species creates stepping stones of habitat that can support our wildlife, including birds, pollinators, and gopher tortoises.

How: Three basic options allow all builders and homeowners to create useful and low maintenance areas of native habitat. Select the planting plan that works best for your space. We will work with you for layout as well as site preparation. The plants will be delivered and can be installed by the homeowner or our crew.

Increased development is rapidly reducing greenspace.

Planting sod and non-native landscaping further degrades area habitat.

Utilizing locally native species creates stepping stones of habitat that can support our wildlife, including birds, pollinators, and gopher tortoises.

The plants are selected using several criteria:

Native to the North Port and Port Charlotte county area, directly replacing cleared plants.

Ranked by the FWC as moderate or high forage value for the gopher tortoises.

Scrub oaks and open sand provide food, nesting, and caching options for the scrub jays.

Flowering plants serve the pollinators, the fruits and berries serve all critters.

Together, they provide habitat and food for all local and migratory wildlife, from bunnies and bobcats to sapsuckers and scrub jays.
